Having dental insurance is one of the best ways that you can protect your smile—however, you still must know how to utilize your benefits to the fullest! But this is often easier said than done, and amidst all of the forms to fill out, appointments to schedule, and other things to keep in mind, it can sometimes be tough to get the most out of your coverage. Here are four helpful tips from your dentist to help you maximize your dental insurance benefits before the end of the year.

Tip #1: Seek Regular Preventive Care

If you don’t already, you should be visiting your dentist biannually for regular preventive care including checkups and cleanings. Fortunately, these visits are often covered by most insurance plans! These routine visits give your dentist the opportunity to thoroughly examine your mouth and ensure there aren’t any underlying issues. It also allows them to carefully clean your teeth of the stubborn plaque and tartar that’s built up. Be sure to attend all of your routine dental checkups before the calendar year ends and your benefits expire.

Tip #2: Know What Your Benefits Include & When They Expire

Dental insurance plans usually operate on a calendar-year basis, meaning that at the beginning of the year when you enroll in your plan, you’re given an annual maximum that will carry through the end of the year. This is the most that your plan will pay for approved services—and sadly, nothing leftover rolls over to the next year! You should also know what your benefits actually include and don’t assume that all dental work is fully covered by insurance. Typically, preventive and restorative care is covered by most plans, as things like tooth decay, gum disease, and damaged teeth can all pose certain health risks.

Tip #3: Schedule Dental Work Accordingly

Sometimes major dental procedures can take multiple visits to fully complete, meaning that it’s always in your best interest to schedule these appointments while you’re covered. If there’s a certain treatment that you need but it exceeds your annual maximum, you might also consider scheduling part of it for the following year—that way, you’re taking advantage of two separate annual maximums and getting more bang for your buck!

Tip #4: Use a Flexible Spending Account

If your employer offers a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can often use these funds with your dental insurance. Just keep in mind that you must use your remaining dollars by the end of the year. There are several benefits to using an FSA, including reducing your taxable income and giving you more control over your budget. This allows you to set aside more money for dental work, if necessary!

Your dental insurance is there to help you take care of your smile—so it’s in your best interest to get the most out of your benefits so your pearly whites continue to look white and bright!
