If imperfections in your teeth make you feel self-conscious, you’re not alone! Studies have shown that those with dental problems are more likely to report feelings of unworthiness and are less likely to be socially engaged. You don’t want flaws in your smile to be the first thing someone notices during an important business meeting or on a first date, after all. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry offers several solutions that can enhance your teeth to improve your quality of life. Keep reading to learn about 3 common issues and how your dentist can help.

Issue #1: Uneven Teeth

In an ideal world, our teeth would all be even and line up exactly when we bite down. The truth is, however, that repetitive motions like chewing put pressure on them in uneven ways which can push them out of place. This can put a real dent in your confidence and lead to tight-lipped grins.

Braces have historically been the traditional method used to straighten your teeth, but many patients don’t want to deal with bulky metal brackets. Thanks to more recent advancements in materials and technology, there’s a much more discreet method available today. Invisalign consists of clear aligner trays that are placed over your teeth to gently reposition them. Not only is it a more visually pleasing technique, but treatment can often be completed in 12 months instead of over several years.

Issue #2: Discoloration

If you’re a fan of coffee or red wine, your teeth probably aren’t as bright and shiny as they once were. Years of eating foods that stain can leave them looking dark and drab. It’s tempting to head to the corner store to pick up some over-the-counter whitening strips, but this can wear down your enamel and cause tooth sensitivity.

Your dentist, meanwhile, has access to professional-grade materials and equipment that can lighten your pearly whites by up to 10 shades during a single in-office visit. Their bleaching agents are safer and less likely to cause discomfort, and you can count on more effective results.

Issue #3: Chips and Cracks

You might think that the small breaks in your teeth are merely a visual inconvenience, but they’re also a health risk. They compromise the structure and strength of your pearly whites so bacteria can more easily penetrate them. As a result, they’re more susceptible to decay or additional injury.

Porcelain veneers are used to cover aesthetic problems like minor fractures. These thin, ceramic shells are coated with a glaze durable enough to withstand additional harm or staining. They’re attached to the front of your teeth to shield them from potential damage while elevating your appearance. That makes them a helpful as well as a beautiful solution.

Don’t let dental problems define how you feel about yourself. Call your dentist to begin your journey to regain the perfect smile you deserve!
