Foods that contain vitamin DNothing is better than spending time outdoors soaking up the summer sun. It’s important for more than just a perfect tan. The sun is a great source of vitamin D, which is crucial for a healthy mouth and body. Unfortunately, many adults are deficient in the vitamin, which can increase your risk of dental issues and certain health problems. With your oral health and general wellness connected, here’s why you might want to spend more time outdoors this summer.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Your Oral Health

According to the Journal of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, there’s a connection between lack of sunlight and gum disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 50% of adults have a form of gum disease. The preventable infection is a leading cause of tooth loss and can affect your overall health negatively, increasing your risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and many other conditions.

Although anyone can develop gum disease, researchers have found that vitamin D deficiency can increase your risk of the infection. About 1 billion people worldwide are deficient in the vitamin. Vitamin D is crucial for a healthy immune system. Low levels can affect the activation of infection-fighting cells, leading to a low immune response. This can increase your risk of infections and make them more difficult to treat.

Harness the Power of the Sun

Sunlight supports a healthy mouth and body in many ways. It is the best source of the vitamin. Healthcare professionals recommend spending 15 to 30 minutes outside several times per week. You can also take a supplement and eat vitamin D-fortified foods to increase your intake. With sufficient vitamin D, you’ll benefit from:

  • Calcium Absorption: Calcium is necessary for strong teeth and bones. However, your body cannot absorb it properly without vitamin D. Vitamin D will ensure your body is absorbing and using calcium properly.
  • Reduces Risk of Cavities: Proper calcium absorption will lead to stronger enamel. Researchers have found that vitamin D can decrease the risk of cavities by up to 50%.
  • Immune Support: Vitamin D keeps your body’s immune system healthy for a rapid response to combat infections.

Keep Your Gums Healthy

In addition to spending more time outside, good oral hygiene is important for keeping your gums healthy. Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes. Commit to flossing daily to remove food residue and plaque your toothbrush cannot reach. Don’t forget to schedule a cleaning and checkup with your dentist every 6 months. They’ll monitor your oral health to detect any changes early, like gum inflammation. They’ll provide the prompt treatment you need to keep your gums healthy.
